1870's COUNTERTOP FIGURAL CIGAR LIGHTER - BARROOM SALOON CIGAR LIGHTER CHERUB

Very rare and important, ca1880’s Figural Countertop Cigar Lighter in the form of a Winged Cherub / Putty in outstanding, original condition.
This fantastic, Figural Gas Cigar Lighter measures approx. 17” tall and 6 1/4” square at the base. The ever so charming Cupid wears little more than a thin scarf of fabric. He holds a torch in his right hand from which the gas flame for lighting cigars would burn at the top.
The figure itself is made of a heavy white metal with a beautiful brass or gold gilt surface and is finely cast in great detail. This rare and wonderful, countertop Figural Cigar Lighter has an elaborately cast base with 4 pad foot "legs". The brass gas pipe attachment is at the center of the underside of the base. The detail of the casting is simply fantastic and the overall look is simply stunning.
The lighter is in excellent condition with no breaks, cracks, alterations, repairs or damage of any kind. The original surface is exceptionally well preserved with very little wear and exhibiting a wonderful, rich and warm patina. It retains the original burner at the top and is complete and appears to be in excellent working condition (the lighter has no shade or shade mount however).
This type of Figural Countertop Cigar Lighter would have graced the Bar in a 19th century Saloon or the Counter of a 19th century Tobacconist. It is one of the rarest and most beautiful examples of this type of Lighter that we have ever handled and is not pictured in the Terranova Reference Book “Antique Cigar Cutters & Lighters”.
