    Description

Antique Peking Glass Chinese scholar's brush washer.  Part of the paraphernalia of calligraphy.    1780-1820.  Turquoise glass base, covered with cinnabar colored glass and then cut back to the turquoise layer.  COLLECTORS.  2 3/8" diameter, 1 1/2" high.  No defects.
"Peking glass" was invented in China in the mid 1700s, first with layers of glass of the same color that experienced jade carvers could carve with much less difficulty than working jade, then with the "cameo glass" technique of layers of different colors of glass that could then be cut through to expose different colors so that a colored sculpture would result.
Acquired from a collector when Neta owned her antique store in the late 90s.
