British Pattern 1913 Sword Bayonet and scabbard, Remington Made, February 1916._____________________________________________________________________
This is a good condition, all original, P13 bayonet made by Remington in the U.S. for the British for use on the P14 and later, the Enfield 1917 model rifles.
Remington was contracted by the British Empire to make bayonets for their military until the US entered the war, in which the nomenclature for the bayonet was changed in the US from Pattern 1913 Bayonet to M1917 bayonet for use on the U.S. Enfield 1917 rifle. Other than a difference in markings and name, they are identical to each other and can be used on either rifle (not on a 1903 Springfield however). As cool as this piece is, I lack the proper rifle to go with the bayonet, so I'm hoping this goes to an owner who has a better use for it than I do.
The sword is marked "2" and "16" meaning it was produced in February of 1916
This sword has a broad arrow acceptance mark meaning it was accepted into use by the British government
The scabbard is stamped "RE" denoting that it was manufacutred by Remington as well. I believe the Scabbard matches to the bayonet.
There are several inspection marks on the blade of the rifle by various British arsenals.
I included pictures of all relevant stamps and markings which you can decipher for yourself
This leather reflects the age, it is supple still, but there is a lot of 'roughing' on the exterior. The metal has a consistent patina all over it, but fortunately the blade is still fairly bright (open to subjective interpretations). Based on the seller I got this from, and the smell of it when I first got it, I'm going to presume this sat in some barn for several decades.
With some careful and skillful cleaning this could freshen right up
