    Description

    CHINESE CARVED AGATE BRUSH WASH POT
    Available for purchase is a carved agate Chinese brush wash pot. These types of brush washers traditionally sat on a scholar's table and were used in calligraphy. This example is made of carved hardstone (appears to be agate) with a floral and leaf design. It measures approximately 3 7/8" long, 2 1/2" wide, and 1" tall. The bowl opening is oval-shaped and measures about 1 3/8" x 1 1/8". This brush pot weighs approximately 4.5 ounces (128 grams) on my jeweler scale. It is definitely hardstone and not a molded composite.
    I purchased this brush washer from the estate of a wealthy family that had many fine antique items from all over the world. Other similar brush wash pots that I've seen online were said to have been made during the late Qing dynasty. I believe this one dates to the early to mid-20th century. It is very similar to several examples recently sold at auction from the collection of a Professor of Asian Art History at the University of Missouri in St. Louis.
    Condition of this Chinese brush wash pot is EXCELLENT. It is undamaged with a few minor natural stone indentations on the bottom side. This brush pot looks fantastic and displays beautifully. It would make a fine addition to any collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. I'm confident you'll be very pleased with this purchase.
