Auctions is pleased to offer a beautiful antique porcelain
    “celadon glaze”
Chinese Brush Pot depicting Taoist gods. During Ming and early Ch'ing dynasties, brush pots (bitong) used by the literati were made of wood, bamboo, porcelain, lacquer, and even jade. Brush pots were an important symbol of a scholar's refinement and were referred to as "Treasures". Classical scholars had more than just the traditional Four Treasures (an expression used to refer to the ink brush, inkstick, paper and inkstone) in their studies - the other "Treasures" included the brush-holder, brush hanger, paperweights, the seal, seal-ink and brush pot.
Used to store brushes, brush pots, as with many scholar's objects, were often decorated with appropriate literati subject matter. This superb porcelain "celadon glaze" example depicts Taoist gods, including Tai Ching (Great Pure), one of the Three Pure Gods, and Shou Lao, the god of longevity and one of the Three Stars, seen here riding a deer.
The term "celadon" for the pottery's pale
    jade
    -green glaze was coined by
    European
connoisseurs of the wares during the Qing dynasty. Celadon
    glaze
refers to a family of transparent glazes, many with pronounced (and sometimes accentuated) cracks in the glaze, which are produced in a wide variety of colors, and generally used on
    porcelain
    or stoneware
    clay
    bodies.
    The brush pot
measures 6.5 inches in diameter by 10.3 inches in height (16.5 cm by 26.1 cm). It shows wear consistent with a dating to the late 19th century, although this is difficult to determine; it could very well be earlier.
This would make an exceptionally fine addition to any collection of scholar's or calligraphy objects, or porcelain collection in general.
