    Unfortunate Company History
    27 x 16-1/2 inch, 100# sack. About 1940's. Stained, fading, no holes found. Bag has been opened and hemmed on the ends. Cotton, heavy weight fabric still quite sturdy.
    Jefferson salt mining company started in 1919 and ended 1956 when the Louisiana mine was flooded in a drilling accident..
    The offices of the company were in Louisville, KY but the salt mines were located at Jefferson Island, near Delcambre, Louisiana. Salt mines were also located on nearby Weeks and Avery Islands. Rip Van Winkle was a character portrayed by local resident/former Broadway actor Joseph Jefferson, who the island is named for. Jefferson built a plantation on the island in the 1870s. Hence the Old Rip logo for the salt compa
