    Description

Pattern 1907 Enfield WWI British Bayonet, Scabbard, Frog and Web Belt.
This Pattern 1907 bayonet is of British manufacture. It was made in August 1910 at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield. It originally had a hooked lower quillon, which was eliminated from new production in 1913 and removed from most of the bayonets then in service. What is interesting about this bayonet is that it does not appear to have been refurbished or updated since. Most of these were refurbished and reissued multiple times, with markings added, clearance hole drilled in pommel, etc. There is none of that on this bayonette. Someone has taken a grinder to the blade to some degree. Otherwise, the blade is as it was when it left the factory in 1910.
All the stampings are as crisp as if they were made yesterday.
The web belt and frog (scabbard carrier) are typical Pattern 1937 kit used during the Second World War and for many years after. The surname written in the belt (Friar) is usually British. The number on the pommel and crosspiece suggest that this was used by different services over its life. The number on the crosspiece is not British and likely not Commonwealth either.
Its condition suggests that has been carried quite a bit, but not put to much actual use. It appears to have managed to be passed from user to user without ever going back for refurbishment. The rusting of the exposed steel and heavy patina on the brass fittings suggests that it had been in storage, untouched, for many years (could be decades).
This was a gift from a friend in Norway in the early ‘90s. Norway had make limited use of the Lee-Enfield No. I Mk. III rifle and Pattern 1907 bayonet during and after the Second World War. Enfield rifles and bayonets were air-dropped to Norwegian resistance fighters during the War. After the War, Norway supplied a Brigade to assist with the allied occupation of Germany. This brigade was fitted out by the British with British arms and equipment, which they used only for a couple of years.
